Adrian Fear
Meet Adrian Fear, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in downtown Milford, Michigan. Adrian specializes in helping mothers accomplish their unique goals no matter where they birth; hospital or home-birth, and works with them through any and all of their challenges.
After the birth of her first child, Adrian needed an IBCLC. “We had a private practice IBCLC come to our home and help us, that experience changed my professional path and really shaped me,” she explains. “I went back to school to become an IBCLC over the next 5 years, and was actually employed by that private practice IBCLC for the first portion of my career.” Today working with home-birth clients are her favorite experiences. The special and much more private births make it very special, according to Adrian.
With referrals from OBGYNs, Pediatrics, google searches, past clients and Facebook groups, Adrian typically sees two clients a day, which gives her enough time to spend with her five children, all of whom were home-birthed.
Skilled breastfeeding support is crucial. To become an IBCLC one must take a 90-hour course on breastfeeding and 2,500 hours of hands on contact, working with families, which really sets the IBCLC apart from others in the field of lactation. As a IBCLC, Adrian can do oral assessments; such as feel in the baby’s mouth and give the families a clear idea if we have structural problems like a tongue tie. She also does a clinical intake; a medical history for both mother and baby, and goes over the birth process, which can give her big clues to why the family is struggling.
When Adrian comes to your house, she brings her professional scale, in order to get a pre feed weight of the baby, and a post feeding weight and she can tell you exactly how well the baby did. This helps establish a feeding goal; making a plan to get things back on track.
“Pain when you feed is never normal, open wounds are also bad, if your baby is losing weight or not gaining, or if the baby won’t latch. When I show up to your house I have a big bag of tools, which I can use to get you back on track,” says Adrian. “I really try to stress, you tell me your goal and I will help you develop an evidence based plan to get you there.”
In addition to her IBCLC work and raising her own five children, Adrian is an accomplished ultra disaster runner and you can usually find her on the local trails or dirt roads.
