Kara Giummo
Meet Kara Giummo, owner of Betty’s Bakes. Kara specializes in cakes, cupcakes, and pies, while sometimes dabbling in dog cakes and dog treats.
Kara graduated from University of Michigan Dearborn in 2011 with a degree in communications. She worked in corporate retail from 2011-2020, then moved to automotive in 2020, where she works for Harada, who manufactures antennas. She started as a Material Analyst and is currently an Operations Coordinator.
Kara started baking with her grandmother when she was a child. Her grandmother let her bake oatmeal chocolate chip cookies so often that she had the recipe memorized before she turned double digits. “When I'm baking, I feel closer to my grandma and that puts me in a good mood. Plus, baked goods tend to make people happy and are usually ordered for a celebration of some sort. It’s fun getting to be a small part of those celebrations,” says Kara.
Funnily enough, Kara isn’t a huge fan of baking cookies now a days. She’ll do it if family asks, but she much prefer pies and cupcakes. Lemon Meringue is her absolute favorite pie to bake; it was her grandmother’s favorite, and getting that meringue perfectly toasted and fluffy is always a welcome challenge.
Betty’s Bakes was born in December of 2014. Kara felt she needed something more creative and baking became her outlet for that creativity. The business has grown organically over the last seven years through social media and word of mouth. The past couple of years Kara has seen wild growth and it makes her super excited for the future.
Kara also started a monthly Pie Club in 2021 and it was so popular she added a Cupcake Club this year. She has 55 members between the two and the support and love for Betty’s Bakes still blows her away.
Kara spends her free time volunteering with Waggin Tails Dog Rescue and recently became a board member. She’s fostered three dogs over the last year and says it’s been a fun ride watching each dog’s personality come out. She says it’s rewarding to help them to find their forever homes.
Kara has some big, big plans for the future of Betty’s Bakes. She dreams of a store front, where she can spend the rest of her days baking for people and helping dogs.
